The original Slum Village; Jay Dee ( J.Dilla RIP X @t3slum X Baatin RIP).... Friends from the Conant Gardens neighborhood in Detroit, they formed a group in 1990. They were originally in a collective called "Ssenepod" (dopeness spelled backwards ) and included both a DJ & a dancer, @TheRealQueD. They were renamed Slum Village by their first DJ, @Waajeed_ (of Platinum Pied Pipers & Tiny Hearts). In 1992, Slum Village responded to an open call for talent from NBA basketball player John Salley. He was starting up a record label with RJ Rice, formerly of
R & B group RJ's Latest Arrival. I think they auditioned for Salley at his Hoops studio, an old bank on Detroit's famed 8-Mile. Slum aced the audition and was added to Salley's artist roster that included @Rosenberg's group, Rhythm Cartel. Slum created a demo that garnered some interest from EMI but John Salley didn't like the terms of the contract so they passed. Around 1993, Hoops closed due to malpractice by an unscrupulous CPA, leaving SV with an uncertain future. RJ saved the day for the moment. He had left Hoops and opened a studio in Southfield where Slum recorded. In 1997 Rice started Barak Records and shopped SV's music, helping SV get a major label deal with A & M in 1998. A & M shuttered its doors & Slum released the classic "Fan-Tas-Tic Vol.II" album through Goodvibe in 2000. Slum's "Best Kept Secret' project dropped a month later on Groove Attack under the moniker J-88.
Jay Dee left the group to pursue a solo career soon after.
